A merchant of Baghdad one day approached Sheikh Hammad Al-Dabbas for his blessings before taking a caravan to Syria. Sheikh Hammad forbade him to undertake the proposed journey because he foresay that the merchant was likely to be robbed and murdered by highway men. The merchant very much depressed, met Hazrat Ghousul Azam on the way and informed him what the Sheikh had told him. The Hazrat promised the merchant his personal responsibility for his safe journey and asked the merchant to proceed. He reached his destination safely with his goods. On his journey the merchant forgot to take back his money kept in the place where he had performed his 'ablution. On going to bed he was murdered. On waking he saw blood round his neck and also felt the pain of the blow. However, he realised that what he had seen was a mere dream, but remembering his lost purse, he went back to the place and recovered it. While he was returning to Baghdad he was confused in his mind to decide whether seeing Sheikh Hammad first would be proper, as he was the senior Sheikh or seeing Hazrat Ghous first was appropriate as it was his predictions had proved true. He suddenly saw Sheikh Hammad. He asked him instead to first go to Hazrat Ghousul Azam by whose prayers his predistened murder had been changed into a dream and the loss of property the purse changed into forgetfulness. SubhanAllah --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- His powers over the souls of this disciples extended beyond the grave. One day in Baghdad a man informed him that his deceased father in a dream had desired him to appeal to him to pray for (he redemption of his dead father's soul, as he was suffering. Hazrat asked the visitor "Did your father ever visited my Madrassa?" Yes he answered. Hazrat remained silent for a while and referred no further on the matter. A few days latter, the man returned to Hazrat saying that his father appeared to him in a dream wearing a green robe and had told him that his punishment has been lifted due to Hazrat Ghousul Azam's prayers. She complained that Hazrat was himself partaking the delicious dish of chicken daily whereas his poor son had been made to keep up on dry bread. Hazrat on this complaint picked up the bone of a chicken, by this bone suddenly transformed into a live cock, which crowed as if to testify that there is no Allah but Allah. Mohammad is His Prophet "and Sheikh Abdul Qadir is His Wali". Addressing the terrified woman he commented "when your son is able to do this, then there will be no reason why he should not eat the same as I do." SubhanAllah ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- During a famine in Baghdah, Abdul Abbas Ahmed, the servant of Hazrat complained to him of the need for funds and of food grains. Hazrat gave him a reasonable quantity of wheat and asked him to store the grain in a covered receptacle and never to weigh it, but to take out according to necessity, by opening out a small portion of the container. He used to draw grains in this way for an unusually large period. The wife of the servant of Hazrat at last felt very much curious about it and in order to satisfy herself opened the mouth of the container. She surprisingly found almost *he same quantity of grain as was kept in the beginning, still remaining and unexhausted. Once the water in Tigris rose to an extra ordinary high level on account of an unprecedent flood. The inhabitants of Baghdad became frightened of the imminent danger. They came to Saiyidina Hazrat Ghousul Azam and solicited his help. There upon Hazrat went up to the river side and planting his stick on the river bank said "Remain with in this limit. The flood then began to recede slowly and came down to the Limit demarcated by him. SubhanAllah ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sheikh Osman Sayrifini and Sheikh Abdul Haq Harimi stated ".We were present before Saiyidina Hazrat Ghousul Azam in his Madrassa on third Saffar 555 A.H., when Hazrat suddenly got up with his wooden sandles under his feet and performed ablution. He offered two Rakats of prayers and with a loud shout, threw one of the sandles into the air. It disappeared from our sight. With another shout, his Holiness threw the other sandle into the air, which also disappeared. None present dared questioning him on the incident. But thirty days after this incident a caravan came to Baghdad from Ajam and said that they had brought some presents for Hazrat. Hazrat permitted the acceptance of the presents of valuable things but these the same pair of sandles which were thrown in the air by Hazrat. They related that on the third of Saffar when they were travelling, suddenly a gang attacked them and plundered their merchandise and murdered some of them in the caravan. The gang then entered the jungle to divide the booty. Then they had halted at the outskirts of the jungle and it struck them to solicit the help of Hazrat Ghousul Azam. Just at that time they had heard two loud shouts which reverberated throughout the jungle. They had mistaken the shouts as the aftermath of a scuffle between the gang that attacked us and a stronger gang of Arabs. We were terror stricken. Some members of the gang came to us and said that a calamity had befallen them and requested us to take back the plundered goods. We went to the place where the booty was lying divided and saw two of their leaders lying dead and the two sandles lying close by. SubhanAllah -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sheikh Abdul Hassan commonly known as Ibn Astantana of Baghdad stated "When I used to live in the Madrassa of Saiyidina Ghousul Azam for the acquisition of learning, I generally keep awake, at night in order to serve the Hazrat, if and when required. One night in 553 A.H. Hazrat came out of his room, presuming he required water for ablution, I took it to him but his holiness did not take it. Instead, he proceeded towards the gate of the Madrassa. I quietly followed him. The gate automatically opened and when he passed on, it closed itself. He then went towards the gate of the city which also similarly opened and closed automatically. Shortly after this we reached a town, which I had not seen before. On reaching the town he went to a house which was similar to his own Ribat in appearance. There were six persons in the house, who saluted him. He proceeded further on and I, stood, by a pillar. I heard the groaning of a person in a low voice. After a few minutes, the groaning ceased and another person went to the place whence the groaning came and carried away a dead body on his shoulder. Shortly after this, another person bare headed and with long whiskers, came there. The man sat down in front of Hazrat who made him recite the declaration of faith used in converting one to Islam. Hazrat then cut off his whiskers, put a cap on his head and named him Mohammad. He said that he had appointed him in place of the deceased. The persons residing in the house accepted the decision submissively. He then left the place and in a short time came to the gate of Baghdad, which opened and closed automatically as before. His holiness (then entered his Madrasa. In the morning when I resumed taking lesson from Hazrat I prayed him to explain the incident of the previous night. Whereupon he said that the town I had seen was Nehawand a distant city in the outskirts of the empire under the Khalif of Baghdad. The six persons in the Ribat, were Abdal and Nujaba. The man who died was one of same. The man with long whiskers was a Christian of Constantinople who accepted Islam and was appointed by him to fill the place of the deceased. The man who carried away the corpse was Hazrat Khizar. SubhanAllah. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The literal meaning of Ghouse is 'AID' or 'Succour' in the midst of difficulties. So Ghouse is a kind of intercessor, who intercedes at a moment when the sins of a nation or humanity are at the point of being punished. These great men appear to be particularly tender hearted like the Holy Prophet. Their hearts melt at the woes and sufferings of humanity and as such become a means to be able to avert Divine punishment. With the assurance of acceptability of their prayers, their prayers become a plea for Divine forgiveness and mercy. Hazrat Ghousul Azam has once said that the Almighty has given him the knowledge of all his murids up to the end of the world, and His Holiness has proclaimed that none of his murids would die without repentance, and attain the seventh degree to alude in paradise. Once he remarked that he would not have the presence of Allah unless He did not accompany him and his murids to enter paradise. His Holiness was once questioned as to the position of a devotee who has regard and love for him, but was not actually his murid nor wore Khirqa from him. He said that such a person was also his murid although the real process of his becoming a murid was not complete. Even a person who had love and reverence for him would not be disappointed by the graciousness of the Almighty. SubhanAllah. Wali kya mursal aaye , khud Nabi aaye, Wo teri wai'z ki mehfil hain Ya Gaus ! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bushair bin Mahfooz states that once my daughter, Fatima, all of a sudden vanished from the roof of my house. I got worried and want to the blessed presence of Sayyed-e-na Ghouse-e-Pak and requested for help. He told me to go to Karkh, and during the night sit in a deserted place forming a fort (Hisar) around myself. Over there think about em and say:" Bismillah" During the darkness of night groups of Jinns will pass by you, their faces will be very strange, do not get scared by looking at them, at the time of sahari the KING OF JINNS will come to you and will ask you about your requirement. Tell him, "Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani has sent me from Baghdad (my requirement is that) you search my daughter." Hence, I went to the ruins of KARKH and followed the instructions of Huzoor Ghous-e-Azam. During the silence of night, horrifying Jinns kept on passing outside my hisar. The faces of the Jinns were so horrifying that I could not look at them. At the time of sahari, the KING OF JINNS came on a horse back, there were Jinns surrounding him. He asked my demand from outside the hisar. I told him that Huzoor Ghous-e-Azam has sent me to you. As soon as he beard this, he got down the horse and sat on the ground. The other Jinns too sat outside the hisar. I narrated the incident of the disappearance of my daughter. He announced amongst all the Jinns, "Who has taken the girl?" Within moments the Jinns caught a Chinese Jinn and presented him as the culprit. The King of the Jinns asked him why did you pick the girl up from the city of the Highest Cadre in Spiritual Pole (Qutub) of the time? He said, while shivering, Your Highness! After looking at her I fell in love with her. The King ordered the Chinese Jinn to be beheaded and returned my wonderful daughter to me. I thanked the King of the Jinns and said, as Allah will! You are an ardent lover of Sayyed-e-na Ghouse-e-Pak. He then replied, I SWEAR UPON ALLAH WHEN HUZOOR GHOUS-E-PAK LOOKS TOWARDS US, ALL THE JINNS START TREMBLING. WHEN ALL NOMINATES AS QUTUB OF TIME THEN ALL THE JINNS AND HUMANS ARE ORDERED TO FOLLOW HIM. (Bahjaa-tul-Asraar) All the Jinns start trembling (with fear) on hearing your name. Your Have that majestic awe 'O, Ghous-e-Azam Dastgir. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE SPOUTED JUG TURNED TOWARDS THE QIBLA : Once a group of the great saints of Jilan Shareef visited the grand blessed presence of Huzoor Sayyed-e-na Ghous-e-Azam, they found the pot shareef of His not in the direction of Qibla (so they drew His attention towards it, hence) He looked at his servant wrathfully. He could not tolerate the wrath and fell down and trembled to death. Now He looked at the pot, it itself turned towards the Qibla. (Bahjaa-tul-Asraar) For the sake of Allah! Give the ointment of dust which touched your feet. My liver is injured and heart is wounded 'O, Ghouse. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KEEP THE POT FACING TOWARDS THE QIBLA 'O, The livers of the King of the Baghdad! It is a fact that the upper most degree of love is that we open heartedly adopt each and every motion of our loved one. Therefore, if possible always keep the pot's spout facing the Qibla, Huzoor Muhaddis-e-Azam (the Greatest scholar of tradition of the Holy Prophet of Pakistan Hazrat-e-Maulana Sardar Ahmed Sahib apart from the pot used to also keep his shoes facing the Qibla. Thanks to Allah Shah-e-Madeenah as far as possible follows the ways of these two saints by keeping the pot and shoes facing the Qibla. But in fact, the desire of Shah-e-Madeenah is that every thing remains facing the Qibla. (Bahjaa-tul-Asraaq) Even though I am disgraced and friendless. Immoral and bad charactered. I am Your's I am Your's 'O, Ghous-e-Azam Dastgir. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FREEDOM FROM THE PUNISHMENT OF GRAVE One distressed young man came to the presence of Ghousiyat and presented his desire, "Huzoor! I saw my late father in my dream last night, he was saying, "Son! I am involved with punishment in the grave, you go to the presence of Sayyed-e-na Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani and request Him to pray for me. After listening to this. The King of Baghdad inquired, did your father ever pass by My Madrasah? He replied, yes Then He became silent. That young man went away. The next day he came back very happy and said, 'O, Murshid! Last night my late father came in my dream wearing a green dress (garment worn in paradise), he was very happy, and was saying, "Son! By the blessing of Sayyed-e-na Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani the punishment has been dispelled and I got this green dress also. My dear son! You should remain in His presence." After listening to this He said, My Allah has promised me that muslim who passes by our Madreash his punishment will be reduced. (Bahjaa-tul-Asraar) During the last Breath, in the Grave, on the Balance Scale, on the Bridge (providing) lest May the grip on the sublime support of Your's not be loosened. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A DEAD BODY'S SCREAMS AND SHOUTINGS Once some people came to the presence of the Ghous and requested, Your Highness! There are sounds of screams of a dead person coming out of a grave in the "Bab-ul-Azj" graveyard. Huzoor! Please bestow some mercy on the unfortunate so that his punishment is abolished. He asked, did he receive the saintly dress of caliphate from me? The people replied we don't know. He asked, did he ever attend my congregation? People showed ignorance. He asked, did he ever eat my food? People again showed ignorance. He asked, did he ever perform prayers behind me? The people gave the same answer. He lowered His blessed head down a bit, signs of anger and prestige were seen on His face. After sometime He said, the angels just now told me that "he had visited you and he had a firm belief in you, therefore Allah bestowed mercy upon him". Thanks to Allah the sounds that were coming out of his grave stopped. (Bahjaa-tul-Asraar) Even though bad, thief, culprit and useless. No matter how He is, He is Your's 'O, merciful. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT WONDERFUL A GREATNESS OF GHOUSEAZAM Someone narrated an incident, which took place in Kutiyana (India), the ancestral village of Sagh-e-Madeenah, that one person used to live there, who was an ardent lover of Ghous-e-Pak. He used to celebrate Gyarhavin Shareef (the eleventh day of the Islamic month and offering is made on this day for sunni saint Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani very enthusiastically. One another quality which was present in him was that he used to give a lot of respect to Syeds (The generation of The Holy Prophet, he used to be so kind/caring towards young Syeds that he used to life them up and move around, and would buy sweets for them. On his death, a sheet was placed on the body, the people who came to grieve were present when suddenly the lover removed the sheet and sat upright. People got scared and started running, he cried out, don't be scared, just listen to me! When people came close he started saying, "the thing is that just now my Mentor of eleventh, the helpful Mentor, the One pure of heart, the Qutub (the highest Cadre in spiritual pivot of Allah, the dear One of Allah, the divine Ghous, the Candle of light, the Mentor of the mentors, the Leader of the leaders, Al-Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani had come. He Kicked me and said "BEING MY DECIPLE YOU DIED WITHOUT REPENTING! GET UP AND REPENT". Therefore, the soul re-entered my body so that I could repent. After saying this the lover asked for forgiveness of his sins and started reciting the Kalima-e-Pak. Suddenly, his head went on one side and he died. Raza will die with his faith alive. If your mercy is with he 'O, Ghous. Congratulation to the lovers and deciples of Huzoor Ghous-e-Pak that the King of Baghdad has said : "My deciple no matter how sinful he is, will not die till the time he does not repent". (Al Akhbaar-ul-Akhyaar) Even if someone calls me notorious it will be casually. That notorious beggar of your's. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE HEARTS ARE IN THE FIST Hazrat-e-Sayyed-e-na Umar bin Bazzaz has stated, one on a Friday I was going towards Jam'I Mosque along with Huzoor Ghous-e-Pak, a thought came in my heart that it is strange that whenever I go to the mosque on Friday with my Mentor people gather around either to say salaam or to shake hands and it becomes difficult to pass through them, but today no one is even looking. As soon as this thought came in my heart Huzoor Ghous-e-Pak looked towards me and smiled and then, what happened was! People started leaping quickly to shake hands with the Lord of Baghdad. There were so many people that there was a huge crowd between me and my merciful Mentor. I thought in my heart that it was much better before. As soon as this thought came in my heart He told: " O UMAR! YOU WERE THE ONE WHO WANTED THE CROWD, DON'T YOU KNOW THAT THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE ARE IN MY FIST, IF WANT I CAN PULL THEIR HEARTS TOWARDS ME AND IF I WANT I CAN PUSH THEM AWAY FROM ME". (Zubda-tul-Aasar) Allah gave You the keys to the hearts something. That this heart becomes the treasure of Your Love. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'O,GHOUSHELP Hazrat-e-Bishr Qarazi narrates that I was travelling with a group of traders along with fourteen camels carrying sugar. We stopped for the night in a dangerous jungle. In the early hours of the night my four loaded camels disappeared, which were not found even after a lot of search. The group also departed. The camel driver stayed back with me . In the morning I suddenly remembered that my Mentor, The King of Baghdad Huzoor Ghous-e-Pak had told me that whenever you get stuck in any problem then call me (my name), Allah willing that problem will be solved, hence I requested this way: YA SHAIKH ABDUL QADIR! MY CAMELS ARE LOST. All of sudden I saw a saintly man dressed in white clothes on a sand dune towards east, who was signaling me to come to him. As soon as I along with my camel driver reached over there the saintly Man disappeared from vision. We were strangely looking here and there when we suddenly spotted those four lost camels sitting under the sand dune. Then what happened was that we caught the camels and re-joined the group. When Sayyed-e-na Shaikh Ab-ul-Hasan Ali Khabbaz was told the incident of the lost camels He said that Hazrat-e-Shaikh Ab-ul- Qassim has said that I have heard Sayyed-e-na Shaikh Muhi-ud-Din Abdul Qadir Jilani saying: "THE ONE WHO CRIES OUT FOR MY HELP DURING SOME PROBLEM, THE PROBLEM GETS SOLVED, THE ONE WHO CALLS OUT MY NAME IN ANY HARDSHIP, THAT HARDSHIP; GETS DISMISSED, THE ONE WHO USED ME AS A SOURCE TO ASK ALLAH FOR SOME NEED, IT WILL BE FUFILLED. THE PERSON WHO PRAYES TWO RAK'AT OF NAFL AND IN EACH RAK'AT AFTER SURAH FATIHA RECITIES SURAH IKHLAS ELEVEN TIMES, AFTER SAYING SALAAM i.e AFTER FINISHING THE PRAYER, SENDS DUROOD-O-SALAAM ON THE KING OF MADEENAH AND THEN WALKS A DISTANCE OF ELEVEN STEPS TOWARDS BAGHDAD SHAREEF AND CALLS OUT MY NAME AND PRESENTS HIS NEED, ALLAH WILLING, THAT NEED WILL BE FULFILLED'. Why should I go from door to door when I have a mentor like You. I received every thing from you 'O, Ghous-e-Azam Dastgir. Dear Islamic Brethern! It is possible that in someone's mind a thought may arise that we should only ask Allah for any help and no one else, because when Allah is the One who helps then why should we ask anyone else for help? The answer to this is that this is the way he makes an unknown number of people go astray. When Allah has not refrained from asking for help from someone else then how can someone get the right of saying that don't ask for help from anyone but Allah. Look in the Holy Quran, where Allah has in various verses allowed asking for help from someone else, but even though being the Omnipotent in every way,. He has asked for help from His beings. Therefore it is stated: Translation: If you will help the religion of Allah, Allah will help you. (Part-26, Sura: Muhammad) Hazrat-e-Sayyed-e-na Issa Rooh-hul-lah while asking for help from His desciples states: Translation: Issa son of Maryam has said to his desciples, who may help me being towards Allah? The desciples said, we are the helpers of the religion of Allah". (Part-28 Sura: Al-Saff) When Hazrat-e-Sayyed-e-na Moosa Kalee-mul-lah was ordered to go to Fir'on for preaching, He asked for the help of a human being and requested Allah: Translation: And make a minister for me from my family (He) May brother Haroon. Strengthen may loin by him. (Part-16 Verses-29 to 31) Allah has stated in another place: Translation: Then undoubtedly, Allah is his helper, and Gibrael and the righteous believers and after that the angels are his helpers. (Part-28 Sura: Al-Tahrim) Dear Islamic Brethern! Did you see? The Holy Quran very openly, in clear words, announces that Allah is the Sustainer, but by the grace of Allah even Gibrael Amin and the dear ones of Allah (the Prophets ) and the Saints and even the angels are the ones who help. Now, Allah willing, this satanic thought that no one can help except for Allah, would be demolished from its roots. The interesting thing is that the ones who migrated to Madeenah-e-Munawwarah from Macca-e-Moazzamah are called Refugee (muhajir) and the ones who helped them are called Ansaar and every sensible person knows that the meaning of the word Ansaar is the helper. (May Allah influence the hearts with my words.) Now may be the satan might put this evil thought in the heart that it is alright to ask for help from those who are alive but after their death you should not ask them for help. If you carefully study the following verse and the topic after it then Allah willing this satanic thought will be uprooted from its roots. It is stated: Translation: And say not those who are killed in the path of Allah as dead; but they are alive yes, you are unaware. (Part-2 Sura: Al-Baqara) It is proved by the Holy Quran that the ones martyred are alive. Now if these people are accepted as being alive who were killed by an iron sword in the path of Allah, then what are you going to say about the Prophets, but about the Leader of the Prophets Muhammad-e-Mustafa? It is stated in ROO-HUL-BAYAN that those people who died by the sword of the love of Allah are also included in this (meaning even they are alive like the ones martyred). Anyway, the Prophets are the Saints are alive, and we don't ask for help from the dead but from the ones alive and by the grace of Allah we accept them as the ones who fulfill the needs of the needy and the ones who help in the troubled times. Indeed, without Allah's bestowal no Prophet or Saint can neither give anything as small as t he smallest thing (particle atom) to anyone nor can they provide any sort of help. Sayyed-e-na Imam-e-Azam Abu Hanifa has, while requesting for help from the Holy Prophet, requested in QASEEDA-E-NOMAN: Which means that 'O, the One better than humans and jinns, and the One who is the treasure of the Bounty of Allah Please also give me from what Allah has bestowed on You and how Allah has satisfied you. You also make me satisfied. I am a candidate of Your shower of generosity. There is no one for Abu Hanifa in the entire creation except you. Sayyed-e-na Imam Sharaf-ud-Din Busairi has requested for help from the Lord of Madeenah in the famous QASEEDA-E-BURDA by requesting: The One better than all creations, there is no one of mine except for You. The One whose shelter I can take in the time of trouble Imdad-ullah Muhajir Makki has requested in NAALA-E-IMDAD: I am sleeping day and night on the pillow of sins. Wake me up from the dream of ignorance Ya Rasool Allah. Hazrat-e-Shah Wali-ullah Muhaddis Dehlawi has written about the grand supremacy of Ghous-e-Pak that: That is Sheikh Mohi-ud-din Abdul Qadir Jilani, therefore says that even in His Grave Sharif he has authority like the ones alive. "[1] The Light is one of the ninety-nine Beautiful Names of Allah. Light is that by which things become known. Things may exist in the dark, but they cannot be seen. Light may be physical, such as the light of the sun or the moon, or intelligible, like the light of the intellect. The latter is that which illuminates the darkness of ignorance with the light of knowledge. Total darkness is non-existence, thus light is that which brings created beings out of non-existence into existence. It is the creative act of Allah and this is one of the meanings of "Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth . . . " The other meaning is that every light in the universe is but a reflection of His mercy, every knowledge a reflection of His knowledge and so on. "Allah created His creation in darkness," said the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, "then He sprayed them with His light. Those whom this light reached became rightly guided, while those it did not went astray."[2] And he also said, as recorded by Muslim, "Allah, August and Majestic is He, wrote the destinies of creation fifty thousand years before He created the Heavens and the earth. His throne was on the water. Among what He wrote in the Remembrance, which is the Mother of the Book, was: Muhammad is the Seal of the Prophets." The Mother of the Book is the source of all knowledge, including the Divine Scriptures. It is the essential knowledge of Allah before He created creation. This is why it is said to have been written fifty thousand years before the creation of the cosmos, a symbolic number, since without stars and planets there cannot be days and years as we understand them. Allah conceived His creation in the darkness of non-existence, then with the light of His creative act brought them out into existence. Thus the First Light was created, a being appearing against the dark background of non-existence. "The first thing that Allah created was the Intellect,"[3] said the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him. He also said, "The first thing that Allah created was the Pen," which amounts to the same thing, since the first intellect is the primordial light in its passive aspect as recipient of the knowledge of what is to be, while the Pen is the primordial light in its active aspect of writing this knowledge on the Guarded Tablet at Allah’s command. "The first thing that Allah created was the Pen and He said to it: Write! So it wrote what is to be forever."[4] From this First light all of creation, with all its varied forms and meanings till the end of time unfolds. This primordial light is what is called the Light of the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, since he is the created being who received the major share of it. This light was also the origin of the lights of all other Divine Messengers, of the angels, then of all other beings. This is how the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, could say, "I was a Prophet when Adam was still between spirit and body."[5] The power of this light made the Prophet’s radiation so powerful, once he appeared on earth, that Allah calls him in the Qur’ân "an illuminating lamp." Allah describes the sun and the moon in the Qur’ân in like manner explaining what He means when He says that He made the Prophet "an illuminating lamp". He says, Exalted is He: "Have you not seen how Allah created seven heavens, one upon another, and set the moon therein for a light and the sun for a lamp?"[6] Here he calls the sun a lamp, since its light is self generating, but He calls the moon a light, since it but reflects the light of the sun. He also says: " . . . and We appointed a blazing lamp . . . "[7] The sun’s light being extremely hot, and, "Blessed is He who has set in the sky constellations and has set among them a lamp and an illuminating moon,"[8] emphasizing that the moon’s light is light with little heat. When He says to His Prophet: " O Prophet! We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good tidings and of warning, as a caller to Allah by His leave and as an illuminating lamp,"[9] we are to understand that He made the Prophet’s light powerful like the sun’s, yet cool and gentle like the moon’s. Some of the Prophet’s Companions were given to see this light as even brighter than both the sun and moon, for when they walked with him they noticed that he cast no shadow on the ground.[10] Those who saw him in the full moon noticed that his blessed face was brighter than the moon,[11] and one of his Companions, the Lady Rubayyi‘, when asked to describe him, said, "My son, had you seen him, you would have seen the sun shining."[12] The light of the Prophet shone at all levels, it filled the material, intermediary, and spiritual worlds, dispelled the darkness of ignorance and disbelief, and is destined to shine across the ages till the end of time. That this light was physical as well as spiritual was borne witness to most amply by those who saw him. The Lady ‘A‘isha related how she saw the whole room fill with light one night, then it disappeared, while the Prophet continued to call upon his Lord. Then the room was filled with a more powerful light which disappeared after a while. She asked, "What is this light I saw?" he said, "Did you see it. O ‘A‘isha?" "Yes!" she replied. He said, "I asked my Lord to grant me my nation, so He gave me one third of them, so I praised and thanked Him. Then I asked him for the rest, so He gave me the second third, so I praised and thanked Him. Then I asked Him for the third third, so He gave it to me, so I praised and thanked Him." She said that had she wished to pick up mustard seeds from the floor by this light she could have.[13] In the famous description of Hind ibn Abi Hala, the Prophet’s stepson from the Lady Khadija, "He was dignified and awe inspiring, radiant like the radiance of the moon on the night it is full…"[14] Ibn ‘Abbas described how he saw light shining from between his front teeth.[15] Abu Qursafa, as a boy, went to swear allegiance to the Prophet, together with his mother and her sister. When they returned home they told him, " My son, we have never seen the like of this man, nor anyone better looking, cleaner dressed, or gentler in his speech; and we saw as if light came out of his mouth." [16] The Companion, Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, described how, when the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, first entered Madina, everything in Madina became illuminated, then how, when he died and was buried in ‘A’isha’s house, the light disappeared. The phenomenon was so sudden that the Companions were taken aback and began to doubt whether they had really seen it at all.[17] This was only the light that radiated from his blessed body, for Madina itself remained the city of Light. Abû Hurayra related how they were once praying the night prayer of ‘isha’ with the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, and how the Prophet’s two grandsons, Hasan and Husayn climbed onto his back when he went into prostration. When he was done, he placed one of them on his right and the other on his left. Abu Hurayra asked him, "Shall I take them to their mother?" he replied, "No". Then a flashing light appeared from the sky, at which he said, "go to your mother." The light remained until they reached their house.[18] On another occasion, Anas said that, he accompanied the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, into the mosque where they saw a group of people with their hands raised, calling upon Allah. "Do you see in their hands what I see?" the Prophet asked. "What is in their hands?" Anas replied. "There is light in their hands," replied the Prophet. "Ask Allah the Exalted to show it to me," said Anas. At the Prophet’s request, Allah showed it to him.[19] Another Companion, ‘Amr al-Aslami, said that once they were with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, on a very dark night and lost sight of each other. Suddenly ‘Amr’s fingers shone forth with light so that they were able to round up their mounts and gather again. The light did not subside until they had finished gathering.[20] As for Abu ‘Abs, he used to pray all the ritual prayers with the Prophet, then walk back to his dwelling, at Bani Haritha, a few miles from the mosque. One dark rainy night, as he left the mosque, his staff was made to shine forth with light, so that he was able to walk safely back home.[21] On another occasion, two of the Prophet’s well known Companions, Usayd ibn Hudayr and ‘Abbad ibn Bishr, left the Prophet’s house late on a dark night. The tip of the staff of one of them lit up like a lamp and they were able to walk. When they came to the place where they usually separated, the tip of the other staff lit up as well.[22] Another Companion, al-Tufayl ibn ‘Amr al-Dawsi, related how, after his first visit to the Prophet, when he accepted Islam and was about to return to his tribe, he asked the Prophet for a sign to show to his tribesmen, at which a light shone forth from his forehead. He exclaimed, "Not here, O Messenger of Allah, they will think it a curse!" So the Prophet moved the light to the tip of al- Tufayl’s whip. He returned to his tribe with this sign and most of them accepted Islam.[23] Ka‘b ibn Zuhayr was a man from Muzayna, a highly talented poet who used his talent against the Prophet and his companions. Once Macca had been conquered, Ka`b became a fugitive, aware that the Prophet had ordered him executed. His brother, Bujayr, was a Muslim. He sent Ka`b a message that he could only save his life if he came to the Prophet repentant. Eventually Ka‘b agreed to this and came to Madina. The Prophet forgave him, accepted his allegiance, and gave him permission to recite the poem Ka`b had composed in his praise. When he came to the passage, The Messenger is a light that illuminates An Indian blade, a sword of Allah, drawn the Prophet took his mantle, his burda, off his shoulders and put it on Ka‘b’s, signalling his approval. The best swords of the time were Indian and the connection between the sword and light is that the Arabs signalled the way by standing on a rise and brandishing their swords in the sun so that they flashed like mirrors.[24] The light of the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, manifested itself in his parents before and during his birth. His biographers have recorded that his father’s forehead shone with a light that a certain women from Quraysh noticed. She knew that the appearance of the Prophet of the End of Time was imminent and felt that ‘Abdallah’s forehead signalled his being the father. She offered herself to him, but he refused. Soon `Abdallah married Amina and, once she became pregnant with the Prophet, the light vanished from his forehead. He met the same woman again and, noticing she no longer wanted him, asked her why. She replied that he no longer carried that light on his forehead.[25] As for the Lady Amina, when she became pregnant, she saw in a dream-vision that a light came out of her that lit the land as far north as Syria.[26] She was also told in her dream that she was pregnant with the master of this nation and the sign of that would be that when she gave birth to him she would see a light coming out with him that would shine over Bosra in Syria. "When this happens", she was told, "call him Muhammad!"[27] "I conceived him, " she said, "and suffered no pain until delivery. When he came out of me, a light came out with him that illuminated everything from East to West…"[28] She also said, "I saw the night I gave birth to him a light that illuminated the palaces of Syria so that I saw them."[29] The Prophet later confirmed this, saying, "My mother saw, when she gave birth to me, a light that illuminated the palaces of Bosra."[30] This event is also a very clear indication of the spiritual rank of the Lady Amina, for to see the palaces of Bosra in Syria from Macca demands the spiritual vision of sanctity. Later, the Prophet’s uncle, ‘Abbas, praised him with a poem, on his return from the Tabuk expedition, saying: You, when you were born, the earth was lit And with your light so was the sky When his wet-nurse, Halima al-Sa‘dia, first saw him, she laid her hand on him and he smiled. "When he smiled," she said, "a light appeared from his mouth that rose to the sky."[32] Some of the hadiths we have quoted here have strong chains of transmission, others have weaker ones. However, we must remember that even the chain considered weakest by Muslim traditionists, is quite acceptable as historical proof to any professional historian on this planet, being far stronger and better authenticated than other ancient sources he works with. It is also well known that weak traditions strengthen each other so as to become acceptable. This is why those we have quoted here have been accepted by leading scholars such as Ibn Kathir, Suyutiî, Qadi ‘Iyad, Bayhaqi, and others. Commenting on the verse of Qur’an,"There has come to you a light from Allah and a clear Book,"[33] the well-known scholar al-Alusi says that the light in question is no other than the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him. He quotes the Follower, Qatada, as an authoritative source for this opinion, as well as other well known scholars, pointing out that this is the most logical interpretation of the construction of the verse, Then he also quotes those whose opinion differs from his in that they believe that both the light and the Book refer to the Qur’an. This he does because real Muslim scholars, as opposed to pretenders and impostors, always quote, along with their own opinions, the contrary opinions of other reputable scholars, so weighing both in the most objective manner. Qadi ‘Iyad, the famous author of al-Shifa’, is of the same opinion as al-Alusi, an opinion, an opinion shared by other famous commentators such as Tabari and Qurtubi. Although the Prophet’s light is the most powerful in the universe, since he is the nearest created being to Allah, it is not the only one. Angels are made of light, the Qur’an is light, the spirits of human beings are light, faith is light, knowledge is light, the sun, the moon, and the stars are also lights. The light of each human being depends upon his faith, knowledge, and virtue. Thus the most powerful lights are those of Divine Messengers, then those of Prophets, saints, virtuous believers, and finally those of sinful believers. This is the hierarchy of human beings. Both the first and the last are human, all have lights, and all are slaves of Allah, but the distance between the top of the pyramid and its bottom is so great that those at the bottom, in Paradise, will see those at the top as distant as, in this world, we see the stars at night.[34] NOTES 1. By Dr Javed Jamil, India The continuous bullying of Iran by European Union, US and other big powers has led to Iran being referred to the Security Council for its nuclear activities. This is despite the fact that what Iran is doing is within the boundaries of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, to which Iran is also a signatory. The Big 5 are doing this to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power because according to their calculations Iran is a threat to world peace. How misconceived their calculations however are, is clear from the recent history. The killings by or in Muslim countries form a very small percentage of the total killings, despite the fact that Muslims form about one fifth of the world population. If we convert the figures into community-wise break-up, 90% of violence has involved Christians, Buddhists and Atheists. Most of the killings in Muslim countries or regions have been the direct result of foreign interventions. These include the deaths in Afghanistan, as the results of Soviet and American invasions, Iran-Iraq war (which was fought at the behest of the US), and Iraq as the result of American invasions. The biggest pogroms of the history have taken place in Germany, Russia (both Christian countries) and China (Buddhists, other religions, atheists). Stalin and Hitler, two of the biggest killers of all times were Christians; few massacres that have taken place at the behest of Muslim rulers, like Saddam Hussein and Idi Amin, have been by those whose loyalty to their religion was almost negligible. While China and Russia hold the distinction for murdering their own people in maximum numbers for political ends, the credit of killing most people abroad goes to the US, especially during last 60 years. Apart from its role in the killings in the Second World War, it killed about half a million people in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, 3 million people in Vietnam and about 100, 000 people in Iraq. America’s role in Afghan’s struggle against Russia, Iran-Iraq war and Arab-Israeli conflicts is too well known to require elaboration. Iis important to note that Iran has not appeared in the list except once. Iran has never invaded a country, never attacked any nation and has never indulged in violence. The only war it fought was against Iraq, which was a purely defensive war. If some students took American hostages, it was in reaction to the Us government’s backing of asylum to the Shah against the wish of the Iranian nation. But no harm was done to the hostages. It can be said without hesitation that Iran is one of the most peaceful and peace-loving nations of the world. In contrast, the big 5 have been and will remain the biggest threats to the world. They will continue their policies of invading, attacking and threatening all those who pose threat to their evil designs of commercialising every human weakness in the name of "freedom" and retain their political and economic hegemony over the world. This is surprising that Islamic Ulema and scholars are keeping silent over the developments. They forget that it is this criminal silence, which breeds terrorism. In recent pat, the US has ransacked Iraq leading to killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis, the European Union has forced Turkey not to pass the Bill against Adultery, EU nations have been mocking the Prophet of Islam and Iran is being continuously threatened. Yet, none has the courage to condemn them. This is a high time Islamic scholar and thinkers took a strong stand. They must tell the Big 5 and European Union that the greatest need of the time is to stop meddling in the affairs of Muslim countries, stop propaganda against Islam and stop commercializing human weaknesses if the world is to be saved from imminent ruin. If they do not care for the sentiments of Islamic people and countries, no amount of condemnation by Islamic scholars and no wars against terror would stop terrorism from strengthening.
